Once we know what we are dealing with, or at least have a pretty good idea of what the spot is, we can move on to the next step which is the actual removal of the spot.
For this, we will need a cleaning solution specifically made for removing spots on carpet, upholstery, and other fabrics. It is a good idea to select these products from a cleaning solution manufacturer that carries a complete line of carpet cleaning solutions and products.
This indicates that the manufacturer has put considerable time, energy, and resources into developing this product line. It also indicates the products have been tested and evaluated for performance, effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness.
Further, if the products have been certified green by a leading green certification agency, it means the manufacturer has taken the extra step to ensure that the products are engineered to protect the health of the user as well as the environment.
With this clear, here are some general guidelines to follow when selecting a cleaning solution made explicitly for spotting carpets:
Ink, Grease, Oil
If the spot or stain is petroleum-based such as ink, grease, adhesives, paints, a concentrated stain remover should be selected. If extracting the carpet, it often is best to treat the spot/stain first and then extract. However, some spotting solutions can also be added to or used as a pre-spray.
Pet Spots and Food Spots
Pet spots, typically urine, as well as food spots the result of coffee, tea, wine, even mustard and ketchup, should be treated with a hydrogen peroxide-based spotting solution. These types of stains are often referred to as natural or organic stains. The hydrogen peroxide breaks down these stains so they can easily be removed by the carpet extractor. Also, hydrogen peroxide serves as a disinfectant. This helps break down any bacteria that may have developed and helps eliminate odors.
Synthetic Stains
Synthetic stains are man-made and include such things as red dyes, candy, or food, especially if it has been artificially colored. Many times, these stains can be removed during the extraction process without special spotting performed. Select a carpet cleaning solution designed to remove embedded soils and emulsify soils, so they can be removed from the carpet.
Some Points to Remember
No matter which type of spotter is used, here are a few general guidelines to follow:
- Always have plenty of blotting materials handy before beginning such as white, clean terry cloth towels. White is necessary so no cloth coloring materials transfer to the carpet.
- Work from the outside in to the spot; never rub the spot or stain
- A small tampering brush can be used for agitation, but use it gently.
- Use small amounts of spotting solution and limit the amount of moisture used to treat the spot. The reason for this is that the moisture can flow to the base of the carpet and when it dries, wick back up, bringing with it the stain we have been trying to remove.
